BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's soccer team came from behind and defeated Dowling College 2-1 off a
Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) goal in the 100th minute Tuesday afternoon. With the win, New Haven improved to 6-4 overall, while the Golden Lions fell to 8-3 on the season.
In just the 17th minute, Dowling took an early lead on the rain-soaked Long Island Tuesday. Dowling's Megan Emanuelo intercepted a pass between two UNH defenders and buried a shot in the left side of the Chargers net. The Chargers did not record a shot through the remainder of the first half, while the Golden Lions had just three opportunities. UNH's
Kim Taylor (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) made a number of saves, but received a yellow card in the 43rd minute after coming out of the 18-yard box to make a divign save. Dowling ensuing free kick just outside of the box sailed high of the cross bar.
Down 1-0, New Haven regrouped at halftime and were the first to record a show in the second half.
Brenna Weidman (Holliston, Mass./Holliston / Utica College) fired a shot which was saved in the 53rd minute. The teams exchanged opportunities until Taylor laced a drop kick nearly the entire length of the field and found
Courtney Marra (New Fairfield, Conn./Immaculate) in open space near the Dowling net. The freshman put away the ball in the left side and evened the score at 1-1 in the 74th minutes. Taylor's ball bounced twice and beat the Dowling defense before Marra poked the ball through the defense and in the net. The Golden Lions recorded one more shot, in the 77th minute, before regulation came to a close.
In overtime, Dowling tallied an early shot, in the 92nd minute, which went wide, but from then on it wsa all New Haven. The Chargers had three corner kick opportunities, in the 96th and two in the 98th minute, but could not capitalize. Francisco then got the ball outside the Golden Lions' box and fired a laser of a shot from 25-yards out to the upper right corner of the Dowling net, giving the Chargers a 2-1 non-conference victory.
Francisco and Marra led the team with two shots each, while Weidman and
Shannon Morales (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic) also recorded shots. Taylor added three saves to her assist on the afternoon.
