Chargers Earn Non-Conference Win at Nyack, 77-61

BOX SCORE NYACK, N.Y. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team defeated Nyack College 77-61 Tuesday night in a non-conference game. The Chargers improved to 8-2 on the season with the win, while the Warriors fell to 0-12 overall.

Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) and Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) opened scoring for the Chargers with a jumper and a three-pointer in the opening two minutes. New Haven would improve its lead to as many as eight and held a 20-12 lead after a Samir McDaniels (Roxbury, Mass./New Mission) jumper with 9:03 left in the first half. Exum connected from long range with 5:23 left to give the Chargers an 11-point lead, 27-16. Holding on to that 11-point lead, Williams converted a jumper and free throw with just under two minutes remaining in the half to give the Chargers their largest lead of the half, 36-22. The Warriors closed the gap to 12 points in the closing minutes as the Chargers held a 36-24 lead at halftime.

Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) put in a layup just 14 seconds into the second half to again put UNH up by 14. The Chargers held on to their comfortable double-digit lead for the remainder of the game. After an 8-1 run over a three minute stretch the Chargers took their largest lead of the game off a McDaniels layup at the 9:41 mark. With a 62-38 lead, New Haven sealed its eighth win of the season down the stretch.

As a team, UNH shot 48.6-percent from the floor, while the Warriors connected on 45.8-percent of their shots. The Chargers also held a slight 37-33 advantage on the boards, while turning the ball over just six times and forcing 17 turnovers.

Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) led the Chargers with 14 points, while Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) and Samir McDaniels (Roxbury, Mass./New Mission) each added 12 points. Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech) chipped in a team-high 10 rebounds.
