SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The University of New Haven men’s basketball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference match-up to American International College on Thursday night by the final score of 81-61 at Henry A. Butova Gymnasium. With the loss, the Chargers descended to 5-15 overall and 3-13 in conference play. The Yellow Jackets improved to 17-4, 13-3 in the league.

The West Division rivals went back and forth through the early part of the game. Behind sophomores Mike Stys and Jeremy Williams and freshman Justin Exum the Chargers hung with the Yellow Jackets through much of the opening stanza. However, AIC rallied off a 16-5 run in final seven minutes of the half, taking a 42-30 lead into the locker room at the break.

Stys poured in a Charger half-high with nine points, while fellow guards Williams and Exum added eight. Isiah Wallace paced the offense for AIC with 13 points, while Ricky Hudson and Adrian Hynes-Guery chimed in with 12 and 10, respectively.

After the intermission, the Yellow Jackets picked up right where they left off in the first half. AIC mustered a 26-14 run through the next 10 minutes and opened a 68-44 advantage. The Chargers hung tough but couldn’t overcome their deficit, as the Yellow Jackets captured their sixth victory in a row.

The home team connected on over 50 percent of its field goals and controlled the rebounding edge by 10. In addition, the Chargers turned the ball over 14 times and only earned six shots from the free-throw line.

Stys finished the match-up with 14 points on an efficient 5-of-6 from the floor. Exum added four points in the second half for a total of 13 points, also dishing out five assists. Williams earned nine points from the field, while Jeffery Adkins and Robert Jamerson each tossed in seven.

Wallace hurt the Chargers for the second time this season, pouring in a game-high 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting. Guery, Hudson and Allen Aragbaye each finished with double-digits.

The Chargers return to the hardwood with a home game on Saturday, February 5 against Southern Connecticut State University. The University of New Haven Athletic Department will host ‘Unity thru Hoops’ at Charger Gymnasium, with all the action beginning at 1 p.m. The men’s game will take place at 3:30 p.m.
