WEST HAVEN, Conn. – On Saturday evening, the University of New Haven and Southern Connecticut State University men’s basketball teams capped off a day of fun-filled activities on ‘Unity Thru Hoops Day’, as the Owls edged the Chargers in the nightcap, 75-57, at Charger Gymnasium.
The day marked the first annual 'Unity Thru Hoops' event between the two institutions. The day consisted of various activities to celebrate unity and enhance diversity among student-athletes, administrators and coaches at the local, conference and national levels.
Led by Greg Langston, Trevon Hamlet and Chazz McCarter, the Owls jumped out to the early led in this fast paced affair. After falling behind quickly however, the Chargers fired back with a run of their own, powered by Robert Jamerson and Jeremy Williams. Both teams connected on 40 percent of their field goal attempts, but the difference resided in two more three-point shots from the Owls. SCSU carried a 33-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Jamerson finished the opening 20 minutes of play with nine points to lead all Chargers. Williams added seven, while Langston paced the Owls with 10 points.
In the second half, turnovers plagued the home team as SCSU quickly extend its lead to double-digits. Behind 49 percent shooting and a dominating performance on the glass, the Owls opened a 17 point lead entering the final eight minutes of action.
UNH fought to cut the lead to single digits but never could reduce its deficit to less than 10. McCarter, Hamlet and Langston finished with 24, 18 and 17 respectively, ending the Owls losing streak and moving them up the standings in the NE-10.
For the Chargers, Jamerson pumped in 20 points with eight rebounds in 36 minutes of play. Williams finished with 12 points and Jeffery Adkins added 10 on 5-of-8 shooting. UNH turned the ball over 17 times leading to 17 Southern points. The Owls’ bench also outscored the Chargers’ bench by a final count of 22-7.
With the loss, New Haven dropped to 5-16 on the season and 3-14 in the Northeast-10 Conference. SCSU pushed back over the .500 mark at 11-10, 3-14 in the league.
The Chargers return to the hardwood on Tuesday, February 8 when they play host to Assumption College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Charger Gymnasium.
