WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's soccer team defeated the visiting Pace University Setters 3-1 Wednesday afternoon at Kayo Field. With the win, the Chargers improved to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the win. The Setters fell to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

The Chargers took an early lead in Wednesday game, with a pair of first half goals. In the 17th minutes, freshman Amber Simms (Southport, England/Southport) scored her third goal of the season off a ball which was kicked around inside the goal box for a number of attempts. Simms eventually found the ball at her feet, as she was on the ground, just outside of the goal line. The goal gave the Chargers a 1-0 lead.

In the 36th minute, sophomore Tami Vargas (Vernon, N.J./Vernon) received the ball off a corner kick by Shannon Morales (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic) inside the 18-yard box and scored her first goal of the season. Morales sailed a crossing ball into the box from the corner kick and it passed by one UNH attacker before finding the foot of Vargas.

After a comfortable 2-0 lead at halftime, the Chargers lead slipped to 2-1 in the 50th minute when Pace's Seanna Wright beat UNH goalkeeper Kim Taylor (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) in a one-vs.-one opportunity in the back line. Trailing by just one, the Setters pressed and controlled the ball in a majority of the closing minutes. The Chargers did, however, capitalize on a counter attack when Monica Yanez (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) and Simms connected on a number of one-touch passes down the field into the Setters' defensive territory. Simms eventually passed the ball off and Yanez connected from inside the 18-yard box with a shot to the lower left corner in the 89th minute.

New Haven finished the game with 13 shots, while the Setters managed six. A majority of the Chargers attempts came in the first half, including four shots on goal in the half. The Chargers attempts eight corner kicks compared to a pair from Pace.

Yanez and freshman Courtney Marra (New Fairfield, Conn./Immaculate) led the Chargers with three shots each. Taylor made two saves between the posts and earned her second win of the season. Morales also handed out two assists in the win.

New Haven will return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon at Bentley University. Game time in Waltham, Mass. is set for 1:00 p.m.
