Chargers Stung by Yellow Jackets, 3-0

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss to the American Internationall College Yellow Jackets Tuesday afternoon at Kayo Field. With the loss, the Chargers fell to 0-6-2 overall and 0-5 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Yellow Jackets improved to 3-4-1 overall and 2-3 in conference action.

The opening 30-minutes of Tuesday's match was back-and-forth as both teams exchanged scoring opportunities inside the 18-yard box. AIC recorded the first shot in the seventh minute, while Joseph D'Antonio recorded the Chargers' first shot on goal in the 19th minute of play. After a couple substitutions by both teams, Gui Dos Santos (Curitiba, Brazil/Bethel (Conn.)) fired a shot on frame in the 32nd minute, while Firmiano Ribeiro (Barreiras, Brazil/B.M.C. Durfee / Franklin Pierce University) had a header opportunities go wide in the 33rd minute. The Yellow Jackets took a lead in the 34th minute when Barnaba Madol pass a ball over his head from the baseline and found Thomas Denomme in front of the net. Denomme put the ball away and gave AIC a 1-0 lead. The Chargers tallied one more opportunity in the first half when a header by Joel Rodriquez went wide of the AIC net as well. The half ended with the Yellow Jackets holding on to a 1-0 lead.

New Haven recorded four scoring chances to open the second half, including a shot and corner kick by Ribeiro which were stifled by AIC. Momentum gradually began to favor American International as the second half continued. The Yellow Jackets began to possess the ball longer and a through pass from Denomme in the 79th minute slid just out of the reach of UNH goalkeeper #J.J. Comeau# before finding the foot of Ike Ekwueme, who gave AIC a 2-0 lead with 21-minutes remaining. As the Chargers continued to press on the offensive end, a ball slipped behind the defense in the 89th minute and Ekwueme scored his second of the game, giving the Yellow Jackets a 3-0 lead. The Charger could not muster an opportunity in the closing minute and suffered a 3-0 loss.

Ribeiro led the team with three shots, while D'Antonio added two. Comeau posted three saves in the loss as well.

AIC narrowly out-shot UNH 11-10, while also holding a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Chargers return to the pitch on Sunday, October 2 when they host Bentley University in another NE-10 battle at Kayo Field. The men's game, scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start, will follow the women's game against Assumption College.
