WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's soccer team opened the 2011 season with a big 6-1 non-conference victory over Dominican College at Kayo Field. With the win, New Haven improved to 9-9-1 in 19 all-time season openers. Dominican fell to 0-2 on the season with the loss.
In the third minute, Dominican netted their first and only goal of the game. A long through ball found the feet of Jennifer Becker who put one touch on the ball and snuck it by UNH goalkeeper
Kim Taylor (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford). Both teams had a limited number of chances in the first half, but New Haven capitalized and evened the game in the 37th minute. Freshman
Amber Simms (Southport, England/Southport) scored her first collegiate goal off a long range, 22-yard shot from the center of the field. Her shot sailed over the outreached hands of the Dominican goalkeeper and evened the score at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Halftime adjustments made big improvements to New Haven's pace in the second period. In the first 15 minutes of the second half, UNH fired seven shots, including three shots on goal. Junior
Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) then sparked a New Haven scoring spree in the 62nd minute with a goal from just outside the 18-yard box. 14 minutes later, Simms netted her second goal of the game from the left side of the 18-yard box. In the 82nd minute, New Haven took a 4-1 lead when
Nicole Pacapelli (West Haven, Conn./West Haven / Stonehill College) scored her first goal of the season. The sophomore also scored New Haven's fifth goal, just five minutes later. She received a crossing pass from
Shannon Morales (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic) at the 11-yard mark and put her second goal away. The Chargers final goal came in the 89th minute when sophomore
Alexa Seidenfeld (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) scored her first goal collegiate goal from 25-yards out. Assist on the goal went to senior
Mary Kitsis (Bedford, N.H./Manchester West).
Francisco led the Chargers with 10 shots, while Simms and Pacapelli both scored two goals off three shots. Senior
Brenna Weidman (Holliston, Mass./Holliston / Utica College) added three shots, while
Lauren Primovic (Avon, Conn./Avon ) added two shots. Senior goalkeeper
Kim Taylor (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) recorded the win with two saves in all 90 minutes.
As a team, New Haven out-shot Dominican 27-5, while also holding a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
New Haven will return to action on Friday, September 9 when they host Franklin Pierce University at Kayo Field. Opening kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
