BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2011 season on Wednesday night at nationally ranked No. 4 Dowling College. The Chargers fell 0-1 to the Golden Lions and dropped to 0-1-1 overall on the season. Dowling improved to 3-0 on the year.
The one and only goal of Wednesday's game came in the 36th minute when a ball was deflected a fired on frame from just inside the 18-yard box. UNH goalkeeper
Jon Creem (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck ) added two saves in the first half and one in the second half of a very quiet game between the posts. The Chargers managed two shots, while Dowling recorded 15.
Steven Gennuso (Middletown, Conn./Xavier ) and
Clancy Purcell (Shelton, Conn./Taft / University of Connecticut) each tallied shots for the Chargers. Gennuso's came in the second half, while Purcell's was a shot in the first half.
Defensively, New Haven played solid, only allowing four shots on goal and 15 total shots. Two newcomers,
Tim Hines (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall) and
Firmiano Ribeiro (Barreiras, Brazil/B.M.C. Durfee / Franklin Pierce University) both anchored the defense with 90 minutes on the pitch.
New Haven returns to action on Sunday, September 11 when they host Saint Thomas Aquinas College at Kayo Field. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
