Men's Basketball Pulls Off 66-56 NE-10 Win Over Saint Anselm

BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Led by a geat all-around performance by Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech), the University of New Haven men's basketball team came from behind and defeated Saint Anselm College 66-56 Wednesday night at Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers improved to 13-5 overall and 9-5 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Hawks fell to 8-10 overall and 6-8 in conference play.

Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) scored the games first five points to give UNH an early lead Wednesday. The Chargers would hold on to a lead of three to five points over the first nine minutes before a Saint Anselm three-pointer at the 10:24 mark would give the Hawks a 15-14 lead. The lead then exchanged hands once before Saint Anselm took the lead for the remainder of the half at the 9:07 mark off a Andre King three-pointer. The Hawks led for the final minutes of the first half and went on a 4-0 run to close the final two minutes. Saint Anselm led 32-25 at halftime.

In the first two minutes of the second half, the Hawks went on a 5-0 run to take their first double-digit lead of the game, 37-25. UNH continued to trail for the first 10 minutes of the second half. Saint Anselm held a 41-30 lead at the 15:27 mark and then the Chargers began their comeback. Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) put in a jumper which sparked a 15-4 UNH run. Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) connected from long range at the 9:42 mark to even the scored a 45-45. The Chargers didn't led off the gas, scoring four more unanswered points to take a 49-45 lead after an Adkins jumper at the 7:47 mark. After the emotional comeback, the Chargers didn't look back. Saint Anselm would tie the score at 49-49 with five minutes left, but in the final minutes Anderson took over the game. The Newark, N.J. native connected numerous times with Jeremy Williams and on a number of jumpers to give the Chargers a lead as large as nine points in the final two minutes. Exum made four three throws in the final 30 seconds to give the Chargers a final 10-point victory.

The Chargers, who didn't attempt a free throw until the final two minutes of the game, controlled the paint Wednesday night, leading 30-16 in points in the paint. The Chargers also held a 32-28 advantage in rebounds and a 50-40 percent advantage in field goal shooting.

Anderson scored 11 points off 5-of-9 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds. The freshman also dished out seven assists, recording one block and grabbed one steal in 35 minutes. Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) scored a team-high 18 points, while Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) scored 14 and Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) added 13.

New Haven returns to the court on Saturday, January 28 when it travels to UMass Lowell for a Northeast-10 Conference showdown. Both teams are tied for second in the conference standings. Game time is set for 4 p.m. For complete coverage, stay posted to www.NewHavenChargers.com.
