SCSU Takes Rainy Tuesday Tilt, 1-0

BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. – An own goal was the only scoring play as the University of New Haven women’s soccer team fell to visiting Southern Connecticut State, 1-0, in driving rain on Tuesday afternoon at Kayo Field.

With the loss, the Chargers fall to 7-3-1 on the season with a 4-3-1 Northeast-10 record. The Owls improve to 5-2-3 overall and 3-2-3 in conference play.

The own goal came in the 32nd minute, when a shot by SCSU’s Suzane Pires was inadvertently deflected into the net by a Chargers’ defender.

Natasha Purchla (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) made six saves for New Haven, while Elizabeth Nickerson stopped all three shots on goal that she faced to preserve the shutout for the Owls.

The Chargers outshot Southern Connecticut, 14-11, and each squad attempted two corner kicks.

Today’s match brought the 15-match Northeast-10 Conference schedule beyond its halfway point. The stretch run of the regular-season slate begins on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Franklin Pierce, and action returns to Kayo Field with a two-match homestand against Adelphi on Oct. 10 and Saint Michael’s on Oct. 13.
