BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 17 Saint Rose – the defending national champion – on Wednesday afternoon on Kayo Field. The loss snaps a four-match winning streak.
The Chargers, who have already clinched a spot in the upcoming Northeast-10 Tournament, fall to 11-5-1 overall and 8-5-1 in conference play. New Haven would guarantee itself a home match in the tournament quarterfinals with a win on Saturday. Saint Rose moves to 14-1-2 on the season with an 11-1-2 NE-10 mark.
Saint Rose struck first in the 22nd minute as Carmelina Puopolo – the reigning Division II Player of the Year – found Amanda Vasquez for her seventh goal of the season. The roles were reversed in the 83rd minute as Vasquez hit an open Puopolo, who buried her Northeast-10 leading 16th marker of the fall.
Natasha Purchla (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) made 12 saves in net for the Chargers. The Golden Knights’ Jessica Gerski turned away three shots on goal, which were fired by
Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ),
Nicole Pacapelli (West Haven, Conn./West Haven / Stonehill College) and
Monica Yanez (West Haven, Conn./West Haven).
Overall, New Haven was outshot, 24-10, and Saint Rose held a 10-2 edge in corner kicks.
