BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference game to American International College Tuesday night at Charger Gymnasium, 57-64. The Chargers fell to 14-10 overall and 10-10 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the loss. The Yellow Jackets improved to8-16 and 6-14 in the NE-10.
The Chargers opened with the game's first basket, but AIC quickly answered with seven-straight points to take a lead. The teams would then begin a back-and-forth first half in which the scored changes eight times and the score was tied four times. A three-pointer and a pair of free throws put New Haven ahead 11-9 at the 13:52 mark. The Yellow Jackets regained the lead after a three-pointer two minutes later, but New Haven's
Sean Harris (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) answered with another three-pointer. New Haven controlled the lead for most of the final five minutes of the first half, leading by as many as six points.
Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) gave the Chargers a 31-25 lead after a three-pointer with 40-seconds left in the half. AIC's desperation jumper at the buzzer fell short and the Chargers led at the break.
The Yellow Jackets eased New Haven's lead with six-straight points to open the second half, tying the score at 31-31 with 17 minutes left. The Chargers' first points of the second half came from
Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) who hit a pair of free throws just under five minutes into the half. AIC would then go on a 6-0 run to take a four-point lead, but UNH again answered. Harris and Williams hit back-to-back three-point shots to give UNH a 41-39 lead. The teams again went back-and-forth with the lead until the six-minute mark. After the Chargers tied the game at 46-46, AIC went on an 11-3 run during a six minute stretch. The Yellow Jackets took a 57-49 lead with just 53 seconds remaining in the second half. New Haven managed to cut the lead back down to five points, but desperation three-pointers fell short in the final 20 seconds and the Chargers suffered the loss.
In total, the game saw eight tied scores and 13 lead changes. UNH led on the boards with a 34-30 advantage, but the Yellow Jackets shot better, connecting on 45-percent, compared to the Chargers' 36-percent. Both teams turned the ball over nine times, but AIC held a 15-5 advantage in points off turnovers.
Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) led the Chargers with 15 points, while
Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) added a season-high and career-best 16 rebounds.
Sean Harris (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) added 11 points, while
Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) contributed 10 points.
The Chargers will return to action on Saturday, February 18 when they host Southern Connecticut State University in a crucial Northeast-10 Conference game. The game is the final regular season home game for the Chargers who are also hosting the 50th Anniversary of men's basketball on Saturday. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. at Charger Gymnasium.
