Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) scored a career-best 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the University of New Haven women's basketball team to a 74-62 victory over American International College on Tuesday night at Charger Gymnasium. The win snapped the Chargers' losing streak and improved the team to 3-21 overall and 3-17 in conference play. The Yellow Jackets dropped to 10-14 overall and 9-11 in conference play.
After a Yellow Jackets' turnover to open play, Moore got right on the board with a three-pointer just 16-seconds into the first half. AIC answered right back with five unanswered points in the first minute. Scoring went quiet for the next four minutes until AIC put in a layup at the 15:42 mark to take a 7-3 lead. The Yellow Jackets controlled the lead until the 8:20 mark when
Nikita Reddy (Germantown, Md./Germantown) hit a three-pointer to put the Chargers up 20-18. The three was part of a 12-0 run for the Chargers who took a four-point lead after a Moore layup with under seven to play in the first half. New Haven then held on to the lead for a majority of the closing minutes of the first half. In the final 60-seconds, AIC went on a 4-0 run to take the lead back. The Yellow Jackets led 31-30 at halftime.
A pair of AIC free throws open scoring in the second half, while
Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, Mass./Holy Name) tied the game at 33-33 with a three-pointer at the 18:08 mark. The Yellow Jackets would eventually regain the lead and hold the advantage for the next 13 minutes of the second half. Trailing 60-53, Moore sparked an 8-0 UNH run and gave the Chargers a 61-60 lead with 4:37 remaining. A pair of AIC free throws gave the Yellow Jackets back the lead with 4:20 left, but New Haven responded. The Chargers' offense came alive and the defense played tough as UNH went on a 13-0 run to close the game and snap a 15-game losing streak.
The Chargers out-shot the Yellow Jackets 43-percent to 32-percent, but AIC held a slight 43-41 advantage on the boards. The Chargers held a slight 18-15 advantage in points off turnovers, but AIC led 18-13 in second-chance points.
Moore went 9-of-15 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the line on the night. She also dished out three assists in all 40 minutes.
Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) added a double-double as well with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Hayes also recorded four blocks, three assists and two steals.
Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, Mass./Holy Name) added 15 and
Elizabeth Cruso (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) contributed 12 points.
