Yanez Scores Again, Chargers Fall at Assumption

BOX SCORE WORCESTER, Mass. – Playing its third match in six days, the University of New Haven women's soccer team came up short for the first time this fall, dropping a 3-1 decision at Northeast-10 foe Assumption on Wednesday evening.

With the loss, the Chargers now stand at 4-1-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Greyhounds move to 1-3-0 on the season with a 1-1-0 league tally.

Reigning Northeast-10 Player of the Week Monica Yanez (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) scored New Haven’s lone goal. Yanez, who has scored in every match thus far in 2012, shares the Northeast-10 lead through matches played this evening with six goals on the year. The junior has now found the back of the net 11 times as a Charger with 28 career points to her credit.

Elizabeth Blasser started the scoring in the fourth minute, taking a through-ball from Andrea Bates and burying it to give the Greyhounds an early 1-0 lead.

The Chargers would strike in the 20th minute, as Yanez was first turned away by Assumption keeper Allison Bruder. Yanez collected her own rebound, however, and put it in the vacant net to run the score to 1-1.

The eventual game-winner came less than four minutes later on a 24th-minute marker from Bates. Molly Kessler started the sequence with a short corner kick to Kristin Bateas, who crossed the ball to Bates for the go-ahead tally.

The Greyhounds added an insurance goal as the ball went from Kessler to Bates to Caroline Kozlowski, who finished in the 72nd minute to round out the 3-1 final score.

Bruder made saves in goal for Assumption. New Haven’s Moriah Saidel (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) turned away six shots, increasing her Northeast-10-leading total to 37 shots through five matches.

The Chargers return to Kayo Field on Saturday, Sept. 15 with a 1 p.m. contest against Northeast-10 foe Bentley. The match against the Falcons will be streamed live in high definition and available on most mobile devices on NewHavenChargers.com.
