American International Edges No. 25 Chargers, 1-0

BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Another second-half comeback was not in the cards for the No. 25 University of New Haven women’s soccer team, which dropped a 1-0 decision to visiting American International on Wednesday afternoon on Kayo Field.

The loss snaps the Chargers’ three-match unbeaten streak and drops them to 6-2-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Yellow Jackets win their fourth straight and improve to 5-2-1 on the season with a 4-1-1 conference tally.

After a scoreless first half, the lone goal of the afternoon came in the 54th minute. Caroline Boyce was lined up a free kick from 25 yards out. Boyce played the ball short to Allie Fitzsimmons, who was streaking down the short side. Fitzsimmons continued untouched to six yards out, where she fired and beat Charger goalkeeper Natasha Purchla (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) to give AIC a 1-0 lead.

New Haven, which had overcome second-half deficits in every match of its three-match unbeaten streak, nearly got the equalizer in the 89th minute, but a cross by Marisa Garcia (Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) barely eluded Monica Yanez (West Haven, Conn./West Haven), who was in position to redirect the ball into the open net.

Both goalkeepers saw a lot of action and delivered for their respective teams. Purchla made 12 saves between the posts for the Chargers, and Samantha Tabak stopped all nine stops that she faced to preserve the clean for American International.

The Yellow Jackets outshot New Haven, 19-17, and attempted the match’s only corner kick.

Today’s outing started a three-match homestand for the Chargers. New Haven plays host to Merrimack on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. and rounds out the three-match stretch with a visit from Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 4 p.m. Both contests will be broadcast live in high definition and available on most mobile devices at NewHavenChargers.com.
