WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Monica Yanez (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) scored two goals, including the game winner in the 64th minute, to propel the University of New Haven women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over NE-10 foe Franklin Pierce at Kayo Field on Saturday afternoon. Ashley Dawson (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) also found the back of the net for the Chargers, her first of the 2013 season.

With the victory, the Chargers are now 7-2-3 overall and 5-2-2 in the Northeast 10. The Ravens drop to 4-5-2 overall and 3-4-2 in conference play.

Dawson scored the first goal of the contest in the sixth minute of action. The sophomore corralled a loose ball at the top of the box and snuck in past Ravens' goalkeeper Katie Weldon to stake New Haven to an early advantage.

The Chargers took the 1-0 cushion into the intermission, but Franklin Pierce broke through with the equalizer in the 55th minute. Hannah Weagle recorded the Raven's marker, heading home a cross from Elzie Vieira to knot the match a 1-1.

The game-winner from Yanez came less than 10 minutes later. The senior forced a Franklin Pierce turnover in the 64th minute and beat the diving Weldon to bury the goal. Yanez put the match out of reach in the 88th minute, finishing a pass from Amber Simms (Southport, England/Southport) to extend the margin to its eventual final of 3-1.

Yanez has climbed to the top of the Northeast-10 leaderboard with 11 goals on the season. She and Simms (10g, 5a) are tied atop the conference with 25 total points apiece.
For her career, Yanez ranks fifth at New Haven with 28 goals and 66 total points. Her ninth game-winner vaults her into fourth all-time in program history. Simms moves into the UNH top-20 with the ninth assist of her career.

Moriah Saidel (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) turned away six shots to record the victory between the posts for the Chargers. Weldon recorded three saves in defeat.

The Chargers continue the NE-10 slate on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Adelphi. After a the longest road trip of the season to meet Saint Michael's on Saturday, New Haven comes to Kayo Field for the final time in the 2013 regular season to host Pace on Senior Day on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 4 p.m.
