COLCHESTER, Vt. – The University of New Haven women's soccer team ceded only one shot on goal, and Amber Simms (Southport, England/Southport) found the back of the net in the 51st minute as the Chargers topped host Saint Michael's, 1-0.
With the win, the Chargers improve to 8-3-3 overall and 6-3-2 in the Northeast-10. The Purple Knights remain winless at 0-13-0 on the season with an 0-11-0 in the conference.
Simms' goal broke the stalemate at 50:56. The junior forward received a through-ball from Miranda Smith (Magnolia, Del./Camden) at midfield and beat the goalkeeper to bury the marker that stood up as the game-winner. Simms moves into a tie with Monica Yanez (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) with her team-leading 11th goal of the fall.
Natasha Purchla (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) stopped the only shot on target from Saint Michael's to preserve the shutout, with Smith, Amanda Hathaway (Stillwater, N.Y./Stillwater), Carlie Schecht (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and Taylor Szyarto (Howell, N.J./Howell) in the back row. The clean sheet is the Chargers' third of the season and the second solo shutout for Purchla.
Kaylee Sullivan made five saves for the Purple Knights. The Chargers outshot the hosts, 11-8, overall and attempted eight corner kicks to SMC's two.
New Haven will take the pitch at Kayo Field for the final time in the 2013 regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 22 with a visit from Pace. The action on Senior Day begins at 4 p.m. and will be broadcast live in high definition and free of charge on NewHavenChargers.com.
