Chargers Upended by American International, 3-1

BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven men's soccer team struck first against visiting American International on Wednesday afternoon, but the Yellow Jackets answered just 27 seconds later, then added a pair of second-half markers to claim a 3-1 decision on Kayo Field. Andres Torres (Medellín, Colombia/Norwalk (Conn.) / Adelphi University) netted the Chargers' goal.

New Haven drops to 1-6-1 overall and 1-3-0 in Northeast-10 action. AIC improves to 3-4-1 on the season with a 1-3-1 conference mark.

Torres' first goal of the fall came in the 24th minute on a cross from Matt Dillon (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan). Dillon now leads New Haven with five points this fall, as today's helper follows up his goal and pair of assists in the win at Saint Anselm on Saturday.

The Chargers' 1-0 lead was erased on the ensuing Yellow Jackets' possession, however, when Tevonne Morris lined up a blast from 35 yards out that eluded goalkeeper Jason Smith (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard) and found the top left corner of the net.

The 1-1 stalemate held through the intermission and into the 60th minute. A UNH foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick awarded to AIC's Ed Sharman. Though Smith guessed correctly with his dive, the NE-10's leading scorer converted his sixth goal of the season into the lower right corner to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage.

With the Chargers upping the offensive pressure, the Yellow Jackets put the match away with an insurance tally in the 84th minute. Greg Smedberg got behind the defense and dribbled all the way from midfield to bury his second goal of the fall, extended the AIC lead to the eventual final of 3-1.

Smith made nine saves in goal for the Chargers. Jason Ryan turned away one shot for the Yellow Jackets.

New Haven returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 5 when Saint Michael's visits Kayo Field for a 1 p.m. meeting. The match will be broadcast live in high definition and free of charge on NewHavenChargers.com.
