No. 5 Saint Rose Holds Off Chargers, 2-1

BOX SCORE ALBANY, N.Y. – The University of New Haven women's soccer team struck first on Wednesday at No. 5 Saint Rose, but the host Golden Knights netted a pair of first-half goals and held on to claim a 2-1 decision. Monica Yanez (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) scored the Chargers' marker in the loss.

New Haven now stands at 9-4-3 overall and 7-4-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Nationally-ranked Saint Rose remains unbeaten at 15-0-2 on the season with an 11-0-2 NE-10 mark.

Yanez's goal came in the 15th minute. She took a feed in the box from Marisa Garcia (Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon), turned and fired from 12 yards out to put New Haven on top, 1-0. The tally is her team-leading 12th of the season and the 29th of her Charger career.

The Golden Knights evened the score just under four minutes later when Jourdan Thompson redirected a Meeghan Arno corner kick in the 19th minute. Arno then netted the game-winner with a 39th-minute tally off a pass from Sydney Bond.

The 2-1 score held for the remainder of the contest, despite second-half shots on target by Sierra Stein (Sherman, Conn./Immaculate) and Nicole Pacapelli (West Haven, Conn./West Haven / Stonehill College).

Natasha Purchla (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) and Jessica Gerski each made three saves. The Chargers were outshot, 12-9, and the Golden Knights launched 10 corner kicks to New Haven's two.

New Haven wraps up the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Southern New Hampshire. The Chargers have already clinched a spot in the upcoming Northeast-10 Championship and remain in contention for the fourth seed, which entails a home match in the quarterfinal round.
