Saint Michael’s Stifles Chargers, 2-0

BOX SCORE

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven men's soccer team was unable to find the back of the net in a 2-0 loss to Saint Michael's on Saturday afternoon on Kayo Field.

The Chargers fall to 1-7-1 overall and 1-4-0 in the Northeast-10. The Purple Knight improved to 4-3-0 and 4-1-0 in conference play.

The Chargers were out-shot 18-9, but had numerous scoring chances in the first half. In the 11th minute, Gui Dos Santos (Curitiba, Brazil/Bethel (Conn.)) was able to get penetration inside the Purple Knight's zone and his shot was deflected to the left by Saint Michael's goalkeeper Nicco Roque. The deflected shot came to the foot of JP DiTommaso (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) but his one-timer hit the right post and deflected out of play.

Thirteen minutes later, UNH caught Roque out of the net. Dos Santos corralled the ball deep inside the Knights' box, but Grant Steinhauser slide in and blocked his shot. The rebound found Matt Dillion but his attempt was also blocked by the Purple Knights' defense.

Thomas Antensaye put the visitors on the board in the 38th minute with his first goal of the year. Jack Loud's cross into the box assisted on the eventual game-winner. Aaron DeCosta add an insurance goal for the Purple Knights in the 48th minute, forcing a turnover in Chargers' defensive zone and finishing in the far corner of the net.

Jason Smith (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard) made nine saves in goal for the Chargers.

The Chargers will now embark on a three-match road trip at Northeast-10 opponents Le Moyne, Stonehill and Adelphi. New Haven returns to Kayo Field on Saturday, Oct. 19 to host Merrimack under the lights at 7 p.m. as a part of Homecoming Weekend.
