Late Goal Leads Chargers Past Southern Connecticut State

BOX SCORE NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Monica Yanez (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) scored in the 88th minute to lead the University of New Haven women's soccer team to a 2-1 win at host Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday evening at Jess Dow Field. Amber Simms (Southport, England/Southport) also found the back of the net for the Chargers.

With the win, New Haven moves to 6-2-3 overall and 4-2-3 in the Northeast-10. The Owls drop to 2-7-1 with a 2-5-1 conference mark. The victory is also the first for fourth-year head coach Laura Duncan against the Owls (1-2-1).

Yanez's game-winning goal came with just 2:06 remaining in regulation. The senior forward took a through-ball and worked around an SCSU defender before burying the ball past the keeper. The marker is her ninth of the season and the 26th of her career.

The goal that started the scoring came off the foot of Simms. Following a handball within the 18-yard box, Simms converted a penalty kick in the 13th minute to stake New Haven to a 1-0 advantage. She is now 2-for-2 on penalty kicks this fall, netting her conference-leading 10th goal overall and the 18th tally of her three-year career.

The Owls' goal came in the 69th minute on a Hannah Spreckley header on a corner kick by Suzane Pires.

Moriah Saidel (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) turned away two shots to earn the victory in goal for the Chargers. Camille Fantini made five saves for Southern Connecticut. New Haven outshot the hosts, 9-6.

The Chargers return to Kayo Field this Saturday, Oct. 12 to host Franklin Pierce at 1 p.m. The action will be broadcast live in high definition and free of charge on NewHavenChargers.com.
