BOX SCORE MANCHESTER, N.H. – The University of New Haven women's soccer team completed its best regular season since joining the Northeast-10 Conference with a 2-0 win at Southern New Hampshire on Saturday evening. The Chargers got first-half goals from
Marisa Garcia (Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and
Maggie Cohoon (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy).
Â
With the win, New Haven ends the regular-season slate at 10-4-3 overall and 8-4-2 in the NE-10. The Chargers finish tied for fourth place with Merrimack and will travel to meet the Warriors on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 4 p.m. in an NE-10 Championship Quarterfinal matchup. Merrimack earns home field for the meeting by virtue of its 3-2 overtime win against the Chargers on Oct. 5 in North Andover.
Â
The Chargers' eight conference wins and shared fourth-place finish are the club's best since joining the NE-10 beginning in the 2008 season. Southern New Hampshire ends its 2013 campaign at 7-8-3 with a 4-7-3 conference record.
Â
In this evening's match, Garcia started the scoring in the 17th minute. She received a long pass over the defense from
Amanda Hathaway (Stillwater, N.Y./Stillwater) and flipped the ball over the challenging Penmen goalkeeper and into the back of the net. The marker was Garcia's second of the season, while Hathaway's assist is her fourth of 2013.
Â
The Chargers struck again in the 44th minute on the first career goal for Cohoon. She converted in the box just before halftime on a back-pass from
Amber Simms (Southport, England/Southport) to extend the margin to 2-0. With her sixth helper of the fall, Simms moves into the team lead in both assists and total points (28) while slotting at fourth in the NE-10 in assists and second in points at the end of the regular season.
Â
Neither team would score in the second period, as
Natasha Purchla (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) turned away six of her nine saves after the intermission to preserve the clean sheet. Purchla has posted three solo shutouts this fall in addition to helming the net for the first half of a combined shutout earlier this season.
