Anderson Double-Double Powers Chargers Past Adelphi, 83-55

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) grabbed 13 rebounds and scored 15 points in his fifth double-double of the season to lead the University of New Haven men's basketball team to an 83-55 victory over Adelphi University Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers had four players in double figures and outrebounded the Panthers 40-24 in the win.

New Haven improves to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the win. Adelphi drops to 1-5 on the season and 1-4 in conference action.

Anderson went 5-of-10 from the field and 5-of-8 from the charity stripe to earn his 15 points. He also rejected three shots, grabbed two steals and dished out two assists. Ashanti DePass (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) recorded a game-high 20 points going 4-of-7 from the field and a perfect 9-of-9 from the foul line. Freshman Jamal Mosley added a career-high 15 points off the bench and Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) netted 14.

The Chargers shot 50 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from three-point range. New Haven controlled the point, holding a 26-16 advantage in points in the paint. UNH also held a 22-9 advantage in bench points. 

Both teams struggled finding the net in the opening minutes of the first half, but New Haven was able to build a 10-0 lead with 11:38 on the clock. The 10-0 run was led by five points from Mosley. Adkins connected on a three-pointer with 8:22 on the clock and put the Chargers ahead by double-digits for good. He started an 11-0 run for UNH who took a commanding 20-point lead, 27-7 with 5:35 left in the first. Another run put the Chargers up 36-13 with 2:16 remaining, their largest lead of the first half. The Panthers responded with a quick 9-0 run of their own and narrowed the lead to 14 with just 40 seconds left in the half. Exum netted a jumper with three seconds remaining, as the Chargers entered halftime with 38-22 lead.

The Chargers continued their hot shooting in the second half, as they quickly developed a 25-point lead five minutes into the second half. Depass scored 13 of his 20 total points on the night in the second half, on 3-of-5 shooting and 5-of-5 from the foul line. Anderson tallied 10 of his 15 points in the second half, and Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech) pulled down seven rebounds to help seal the victory down the stretch. UNH held a 20-point lead for nearly the entire second half and led by as many as 30 points, 83-53, in the final seconds.

New Haven returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 10 when it hosts Saint Rose in another Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division contest at Charger Gymnasium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
