BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. – Monica Yanez (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) headed home the tying goal in the 81st minute to push the University of New Haven women's soccer team to a 1-1 draw at No. 21 Dowling on Thursday afternoon on Long Island. After the deadlock, both teams remain unbeaten at 2-0-1.
Â
New Haven entered today's match slotted at sixth in the NSCAA East Region Rankings, while Dowling garnered the No. 3 spot in addition to its place on the national ledger.
Â
The late goal for Yanez was her fifth of the season and the 22nd of her career, moving into a tie for fifth place on the Chargers' all-time list alongside former teammate Lucy Francisco '13. Yanez has scored in all three matches this season, netting two goals apiece in last week's home wins over NYIT and Dominican. She is the reigning Northeast-10 Player of the Week and NewHavenChargers.com Student-Athlete of the Week.
Â
Natasha Purchla (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) turned away four shots in goal, including one in each overtime to preserve the 1-1 stalemate.
Â
After 70 minutes of scoreless action, Dowling got on the board first in the 71st minute. Lindsey Thompson uncorked a shot from 25 yards out that found the top right corner of the goal.
Â
With time ticking away, an 81st-minute corner kick provided an opportunity for the Chargers to net the equalizer. Amanda Hathaway (Stillwater, N.Y./Stillwater) launched the corner and, following a scramble in the box, Yanez headed the ball past Dowling goalkeeper Melissa Guglielmo to knot the score at 1-1.
Â
New Haven continued to be the aggressor, earning a pair of corner kicks in the closing minutes of regulation, but neither attempt resulted in a goal as the match headed into overtime. Both Purchla and Guglielmo made saves in the extra sessions, holding the score at 1-1 as time expired.
Â
UNH held a 10-9 advantage in shots and attempted seven corner kicks to the Golden Lions' four.
