Late Goal Pushes Dowling Past New Haven, 2-1

BOX SCORE

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The game-winning goal came with just 1:55 to play as the University of New Haven men's soccer team fell to Dowling its 2013 season opener, 2-1, under the lights at Kayo Field.

Sean Collins netted the game-winner on a feed from Kariym Balthazar in the 89th minute. Balthazar scored the tying goal for the Golden Lions at 73:57 in a scrum following a Dowling corner kick.

The Chargers' marker came courtesy of an own goal. Sal DiTommaso (Farmington, Conn./Farmington / Central Connecticut State University) ran down a loose ball in the zone and worked around a defender to fire a cross toward Dowling goalkeeper Chris Friedl. Golden Lion back Roberto Vernaschi attempted to clear it with a header but inadvertently sent it into his own net to give New Haven a 1-0 advantage in the 26th minute.

James Pyatsky (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Garden City) made three saves in goal for the Chargers, who were outshot by a 22-4 margin.

The non-conference slate resumes on Sunday, Sept. 8 with a 3 p.m. trip to Saint Thomas Aquinas. The meeting begins a three-game road swing to round out the non-NE-10 portion of the schedule. Action returns to Kayo Field against Saint Rose on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 4 p.m.
