Chargers Shut Out NYIT, 4-0, to Open 2013 Season

BOX SCORE

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Monica Yanez (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) netted two goals and the defense ceded just one shot as the University of New Haven women's soccer team rolled past the visiting New York Institute of Technology, 4-0, this afternoon in the 2013 season opener. Carlie Schecht (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and Tami Vargas (Vernon, N.J./Vernon) also scored for the Chargers.

New Haven starts the fall at 1-0-0 for the third-consecutive season and extends its winning streak to seven-straight over NYIT.

Yanez, a First Team All-Northeast-10 performer in 2012, followed up her 12-goal campaign last season with a pair of tallies to begin 2013. She netted the game-winner in the ninth minute and added a second in the 18th. Marisa Garcia (Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) assisted on the first marker with a cross that Yanez headed home to stake UNH to an early 1-0 lead.

Three Chargers teamed up for the second score when Amanda Hathaway (Stillwater, N.Y./Stillwater) sent a ball from the back row to the midfield, where Amber Simms (Southport, England/Southport) advanced it the rest of the way to Yanez, who took one touch then lofted a shot over NYIT goalkeeper Cassie Betancourt.

Hathaway finished the day with three assists in addition to playing a strong center back for the New Haven defense.

The Chargers struck again in the first half off of a corner kick. Hathaway launched the attempt into the box, and Schecht headed it home to record her first collegiate goal in the 36th minute of her debut in the Blue and Gold.

Hathaway also set the table for Vargas' 65th-minute tally that rounded out the final score at 4-0.

Natasha Purchla (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) started between the posts and did not face a shot in the first half. Moriah Saidel (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) made one save to complete the clean sheet. The Chargers outshot NYIT, 20-1.

Betancourt made nine saves for the visiting Bears.

New Haven's season-opening homestand concludes on Saturday, Sept. 7 when Dominican visits Kayo Field for a 1 p.m. contest.
