Chargers Battle St. Thomas Aquinas to 2-2 Draw

BOX SCORE SPARKILL, N.Y. – The University of New Haven men's soccer team got goals from Sal DiTommaso (Farmington, Conn./Farmington / Central Connecticut State University) and Will Richard (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) en route to a 2-2 draw at Saint Thomas Aquinas on Sunday afternoon. Andres Torres (Medellín, Colombia/Norwalk (Conn.) / Adelphi University) and Gui Dos Santos (Curitiba, Brazil/Bethel (Conn.)) notched the assists.

Following the 110-minute stalemate, both teams move to 0-1-1 on the young 2013 season.

After the Spartans started the scoring in the fifth minute on a Michael Corbi marker, the Chargers picked up the equalizer just four minutes later. Torres worked his way into the box and connected with DiTommaso, who buried his first collegiate goal to run the score to 1-1.

That tally held into the intermission, before New Haven took its first lead of the afternoon in the 49th minute. The goal for Richard was also the first of his career, converting a pass from Dos Santos from just a few yards out.

The final goal came in the 71st minute on a goal from STAC's Sean DeVito off of a throw in.

James Pyatsky (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Garden City) made six saves to preserve the 2-2 deadlock. Nathan Mangione turned away four shots for the host Spartans.

The squads were even with 13 shots apiece, while the Chargers were awarded 12 corner kicks to STAC's two.

New Haven will return to the Empire State on Tuesday, continuing the non-conference schedule at Queens College at 4 p.m. After a Friday outing at Molloy, the Northeast-10 slate begins on Kayo Field against Saint Rose on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 4 p.m.
