Women's Volleyball Sweeps Stonehill

EASTON, Mass. - Junior outside hitter Kristen Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) tallied 10 kills and five digs as the University of New Haven women's volleyball team earned a pivotal Northeast-10 Conference victory at Stonehill Saturday afternoon. The Chargers earned the three-set victory in overtime fashion, 26-24, 31-29 and 25-19.

With the victory, the Blue and Gold improved to 17-5 overall and 8-1 in NE-10 play. The Skyhawks fall to 17-5 overall and 8-2 in conference action.

Meghan Kennelly (Detroit, Mich./Eisenhower) finished with nine kills and 10 digs, while Kirsty Atufunwa chipped in with eight finishers and five total blocks for a team-leading 12 points. Kaulana Ane (Paia, Hawai'i/Kamehameha) managed the offensive attack with 25 assists and 12 digs. Kea-Marie Olaso (Kailua, Hawai'i/Le Jardin Academy) added a team-high 14 digs.

As a team, New Haven hit at a .208 clip with 40 kills on 120 attempts with 15 errors. The Chargers also totaled seven team blocks. UNH limited the Skyhawks to a .120 hitting percentage.

The Skyhawks top performer was Delia Phillips with 13 kills and nine digs. Emily Iverson handed out 31 assists and Claire Manuszak added 16 digs.

New Haven and Stonehill played a tight opening set with the Chargers edging the Skyhawks 26-24 with a bad set from Iverson. Back-to-back Stonehill errors earned the Chargers the victory, despite hitting .125 in the opening set.

In the second set, the longest of the afternoon, the Chargers needed six extra points to take a 2-0 lead in the match. After fighting off set-point for the Skyhawks, an Ane kill, a Lexis Peterson (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor Central) and Hayley Wilson (Denver, Colo./Overland) block and another Stonehill error sealed the set for UNH.

The Blue and Gold jumped out quickly in the third set, 10-5, and then opened a 21-14 lead later in the set. Kennelly finished off the 25-19 victory with her ninth kill of the afternoon.

The Chargers return to conference action next week with another pivotal road match at Adelphi. First serve from Garden City is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 28.
