Chargers Conclude 2014 with Loss at Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – The University of New Haven men's soccer team wrapped up its 2014 season with a 5-2 loss at Northeast-10 opponent Bentley on Friday afternoon. Will Richard (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) and Eric Robertson (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) scored goals for the Chargers.

New Haven concludes its season at 2-15-0 overall and 1-12-0 in the NE-10. Bentley, which needed a win today to remain in the postseason picture but was ultimately denied a berth due to American International's victory over Saint Anselm, ends its campaign at 6-10-1 on the season with a 5-10-1 conference mark.

The Falcons started the scoring in the 26th minute on a Nicholas Italia goal and took a 2-0 lead into the intermission following Silmar Bueno's 44th-minute tally. Bentley tacks on an insurance marker with a 58th-minute penalty kick off the foot of Lucas Pagano.

The Chargers got on the board in the 62nd minute. Alain Laurent (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) had a shot saved by Jack Blatchford, but Richard followed and buried the rebound to cut the deficit to 3-1. The marker was Richard's second of the fall, and Laurent picked up his third assist of the year.

Bentley added two more tallies – a Tommy Nickerson goal and a converted penalty kick by Scott Levy – before the Chargers rounded out the 5-2 final. The goal went to Eric Robertson, who netted his first of 2014 on an assist by Richard in the 84th minute.

Marc Scelsa (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and James Pyatsky (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Garden City) split time between the posts. Scelsa made three saves in the first half, and Pyatsky turned away three Bentley offerings after the break.

Today's match marked the final contest in the New Haven careers of Robertson, Sal DiTommaso (Farmington, Conn./Farmington / Central Connecticut State University) and Andres Torres (Medellín, Colombia/Norwalk (Conn.) / Adelphi University).
