Chargers Shutout Pace for Sixth Straight Win

OSSINING, N.Y.,- With two red-zone stands and three turnovers, the University of New Haven defense led the football team to a 40-0 victory over Pace Saturday afternoon in the Empire State. The Chargers' defense held the Setters to just 98 yards on 53 plays and secured their first shutout of the season.

With the win, New Haven won its sixth straight contest and improved to 6-3 overall, 6-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The winless Setters fall to 0-9 overall and 0-8 in conference play.

The UNH defense was anchored by inside linebacker Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) who recorded his sixth game with double figure tackles this season. He brought down 10 Setters, while added a pass breakup and one tackle-for-loss. Jacob Weaver (Wilmington, Del./Archmere Academy) added seven total tackles with two tackles-for-loss, a forced fumble, a sack and an interception. The most impressive defensive play of the afternoon came from Tarik Pusey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln / Rhode Island) who picked up a fumble and went 90-yards for a Charger score in the second half. His touchdown would eventually be called off because of a penalty, but the Chargers' did convert on the offensive end to take a 34-0 lead late in the third quarter.,

Drake Harris (Union, N.J./Union) led the defensive line with six tackles, 2.5 tackles-for-loss and a sack. Defensive end Ralph Jonathas (Everett, Mass./Everett) added five tackles and a sack. Linemen Michael Intrieri (Westerly, R.I./Westerly / Dean College) and Chad Woodfine (Springfield, Mass./Chicopee / Suffield Academy) also recorded sacks in the win.,Matthew Rossi (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) intercepted the Chargers' other turnover of the afternoon when he hauled in a tipped ball and returned it 10 yards.

Offensively, Joey Bradley (Issaquah, Wash./Issaquah / University of North Dakota) paced the New Haven offense with 220 yards and two touchdowns on 22-of-29 passing. Rishawn Harris (Springfield, Mass./Putnam Vocational Technical Academy) was his favorite receiver with seven catches for 98 yards and a score. Henry Adegunle (Rockaway, N.Y./Channel View) brought in five catches for 51 yards and a touchdown. Six other Chargers also catch balls in the win, including three by Roshawn Wilson (Miami, Fla./Miami Southridge) for 21 yards.

The running game was led by Lemar Thomas (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) with 58 yards on five carries (11.6 yards per carry). Darrius Pritchett (Queens, N.Y./Avon Old Farms) added 41 yards, while Trevor Officer (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) added 37 on seven carries. ,Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) finished the rushing attack with seven carries for 37 yards and two touchdowns.

Brian Roberts (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst Central) added to the Chargers score line with two field goals in the victory. He converted 25- and 27-yard attempts in the win.

Despite the defense's strong start, the UNH offense took longer to get moving as the entire first quarter featured a punt and a turnover. The Chargers series which ran through the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second, ended up being the game's first scoring drive. Roberts put New Haven on the scoreboard just over one minutes into the second quarter with his first of two field goals in the game. Pace answered with a short three-and-out before the Chargers scored their first touchdown.Ā The UNH scoring drive included a 21-yard Bradley pass to Adegunle and finished with an eight yard touchdown carry by Anderson.

Rossi halted Pace's next drive with an interception, while Bradley hooked up with Adegunle on a 24-yard touchdown strive on UNH's ensuing series. The New Haven defense backed Pace up on the game's next drive, while the Chargers managed the clock on their next drive to attempt a field goal as time expired in the first half. Roberts 25-yard attempt cruised through the middle of the uprights and the Chargers took a 20-0 lead into halftime.

It was more of the same in the second half for the Chargers offense and defense. After UNH turned the ball over on the opening kickoff of the second half, Weaver stepped in front of the Setters first pass and setup first down at the Pace 31-yard line. Three plays later Bradley and Harris connected to put New Haven ahead 27-0 with 13:42 left in the third.Ā

The Setters next drive was the longest of the afternoon for Pace. It went 57 yards on 14 plays all the way to New Haven's 2-yard line. Pace was set with 1st-and-goal from the two and the UNH defense buckled down to force a 4th-and-goal from the three. On the play, Pusey and a host of Charger defenders broke up the play in the backfield and the junior linebacker eventually scooped up a fumble and took it the entire length of the field. Called for a penalty on the play, the Chargers took over at the Pace 1-yard line with 5:23 left in the third. Six plays later, Anderson rumbled in for his second of the afternoon.

Thomas added one more UNH touchdown in the beginning of the fourth quarter on a 42-yard sprint to bring the score to it's final 40-0 number.

Both teams had two more series in the fourth quarter, but neither team added points.

New Haven concludes the regular season next Saturday when it hosts Saint Anselm at Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium for Military Appreciation and Senior Day. Game time on Nov. 8 is set for 12 p.m.
