Women's Soccer and SNHU Play to 1-1 Draw in Season Finale

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with visiting Southern New Hampshire on a rain-soaked Kayo Field on Saturday afternoon. The contest marked the Chargers' season finale and included pre-match Senior Day festivities.

The Chargers conclude the 2014 campaign with a 6-9-2 overall record and a 5-7-2 Northeast-10 Conference record while the Penmen also end their season with a 6-10-2 record and 4-9-1 in conference.

After the Penmen took a 1-0 lead on a Tia Woodarek goal in the 29th minute, New Haven netted the equalizer just before the intermission.

In the 44th minute, SNHU goalkeeper saved a Marisa Garcia (Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) shot but was unable to control it. Amber Simms (Southport, England/Southport) collected the ricochet and buried it to net her sixth goal of the fall. Garcia's assist is her team-leading fourth of 2014.

With a marker in her collegiate finale, Simms solidifies her place the sixth all-time leading goal scorer and point scorer in New Haven women's soccer history. The forward from Southport, England accumulated 27 goals and 68 total points in her career. She also ranks ninth in Charger lore with 14 career assists.

The outing remained scoreless throughout the second half in addition to 20 minutes of overtime, and 1-1 tally held up as final.

Moriah Saidel (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) started between the posts and made one save in the first half. Natasha Purchla (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot), who started in the field for the first time in her career, took over in goal of the second half and overtime and stopped both shots that she faced.

Purchla concludes her career as the program's all-time leader in save percentage at .812. Her career goals-against average of 1.34 is good for third all-time for the Chargers.

Scanlon worked all 110 minutes in goal for the Penmen and made five saves.

Five seniors were honored before the match for their hard work and dedication to the New Haven women's soccer program. Purchla, Saidel, Hannah Allen (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) and 2014 co-captains Simms and Courtney Marra (New Fairfield, Conn./Immaculate) were a part of 37 New Haven victories and two Northeast-10 Championship appearances, including the first-ever Northeast-10 postseason win in program history.
