PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Despite a season-high in points from
Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career), the University of New Haven women's basketball team fell 63-59 in a defensive struggle against the Pace Setters in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.
Moore led all scorers with her 21 point output to go along with seven rebounds.
Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) chipped in with nine points while
Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) led the Chargers (3-1, 1-1 NE-10) with eight rebounds.
Things started well for New Haven as after Pace (1-3, 1-1 NE-10) scored the first three points of the game, the Chargers went on an 8-1 run, capped by a Moore layup. The visitors then saw Pace go on a run of their own, as the Setters took a 24-16 lead with 7:40 remaining in the first half. Undaunted, New Haven ran out on a 16-10 spurt to close out the frame trailing 34-32.
In the second half, the Chargers jumped ahead, outscoring Pace 11-3 in the first five and a half minutes to take a 43-37 lead with 14:23 to go. The Setters responded, scoring 15 of the next 17 points and eventually held a 62-59 lead with 11 seconds remaining. Coming out of a timeout,
Elizabeth Cruso (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) had a look at a potential game-tying three with six seconds left, but the shot bounced off the right side of the rim.
After four road games to start the season, the Chargers open up their home slate on Tuesday at 5:30 pm, when they host NE-10 foe American International.
