Dominant Second Half Propels Women's Basketball Past Saint Anselm

WEST HAVEN, CONN. – The University of New Haven women's basketball team placed four players in double-figures and outscored Saint Anselm 43-17 in the second half as the Chargers downed the Hawks 70-46 in a non-conference contest at Charger Gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, New Haven is now 9-2 while Saint Anselm falls to 4-6.

Elizabeth Cruso (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) led the way for the Chargers with 14 points, all of them in the second half including a trio of three-pointers. Ashley LeBlanc (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) added 11 points and seven rebounds while Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) and Rykema Stone (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) each netted 10 for the game. Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) turned in a good overall performance with eight points, 14 rebounds and six assists. Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) added eight points and nine caroms.

Trailing 29-27 entering the second half, New Haven started out on fire, opening up on a 10-0 run in a span of less than three minutes, capped by a three-pointer and a long two from Cruso. The Chargers continued to apply the pressure even after the Hawks scored their first points of the stanza, as New Haven extended the run to 23-4 during the first 7:16 of the half, hitting on 9-of-11 shots from the field and going 4-for-5 from beyond the arc.

Overall in the second half, UNH made 17-of-30 (56.7 percent) of their shots.

The first half was a back and forth affair as the lead changed hands 11 times.

The Chargers open their 2015 portion of their schedule with a Northeast-10 Conference matchup as they host crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State on Saturday, January 3 at 1:30 p.m.
