Adkins' Last-Second Bucket Pushes Chargers to 61-60 Win at Le Moyne

BOX SCORE SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Ashanti DePass (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) hit a three-pointer with 57 seconds left and Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) put in a layup with 1.1 second left to lift the University of New Haven men's basketball team to a 61-60 victory at Le Moyne College Tuesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division matchup. Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) led the team with 14 points and six rebounds, while Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) added 13 points and DePass finished with 11 points.

New Haven snaps a two-game skid and improves to 16-7 overall and 11-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the win. Le Moyne drops to 13-10 on the season and 10-7 in conference action.

Connecting on 18-of-53 field goals, the Chargers shot 34 percent from the floor, while the Dolphins shot 44 percent. Both teams attempted 19 free throws, with New Haven making 17 and Le Moyne converting 14. The hosts also controlled the paint, holding a 24-16 advantage in points in the paint. With just three turnovers in the game, New Haven turned the ball over seven fewer times than Le Moyne.

Exum added four rebounds to his nightly total, while DePass chipped in with two rebounds and two assists. Adkins finished with eight points, none bigger than the game's final two, and a team-high six assists. 

A Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech) opened scoring in Tuesday's game and it pushed New Haven to the lead for a majority of the first half. UNH scored the first six points in the first 6:11 of the opening half. The Dolphins answered with a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the game at the 12:27 mark. During the next six minutes, the lead changed hands three times and the score was tied four times. Nate Champion hit a pair of free throws for Le Moyne at the 6:46 mark to even the score at 16-16. Exum, DePass and Anderson each scored three points over the next 3:24 to give New Haven its largest lead of the game, 26-16. UNH remained in the lead, but the Dolphins closed the gap with seven unanswered points to end the first half just two points behind, 27-25.

The Dolphins scored on their first possession of the second half and the game was knotted against at 27-27. New Haven missed on the offensive end and Le Moyne took the lead with a trifecta from Champion at 19:21. The Dolphins held on to that lead until Adkins' layup with 1.1 seconds left in the game. Twice in the second half, the Dolphins led by as many as 10. The Chargers rallied late and used a 12-3 run to cut Le Moyne's lead to 57-56 with 1:27 on the clock. The Dolphins hit a three-pointer 18 seconds later to regain a four-point lead with over a minute left. DePass started the final spree for UNH and Adkins completed the come-from-behind victory with the go-ahead layup with 1.1 seconds left. The Dolphins desperation attempt at the buzzer fell short.

New Haven returns home its final two home games of the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 15 against Pace and on Wednesday, Feb. 19 against American International. Game time on Saturday against the Setters is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. It's also Pink Zone day at Charger Gymnasium and all fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.
