LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Looking for back-to-back wins after its season-opening victory over the New York Institute of Technology, the University of New Haven women's soccer team was bested by the Lions of Georgian Court University in Lakewood, N.J. Saturday afternoon by a score of 4-1. The lone goal for the Chargers came from senior forward
Amber Simms (Southport, England/Southport) in the 72nd minute.
Both UNH goaltenders saw action today with
Natasha Purchla (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) making two saves and
Moriah Saidel (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) with one. A pair of Chargers led the team in shots tallying four each were Simms and
Sierra Stein (Sherman, Conn./Immaculate).
Marisa Garcia (Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and

With a chance to score early, Simms rang one off the post in the first minute. UNH used the momentum and earned back-to-back corner kicks with Marra recording a shot in the 11th minute. Georgian Court was first on the board in the 20th minute when Elizabeth Croon netted her first of the season. Looking to tie it up, the Chargers rallied back with strong shots by Stein and Marra yet again.
Georgian Court took advantage of their back-to-back corner kicks in the 24th minute and snuck one by Purchla. Morgan Peacock headed the ball off a kick from Tori Capestro for the 2-0 lead for the Lions. With both teams getting multiple shots to end the half, Georgian Court had the lead going into the locker room. New Haven tested Georgian Court goalkeeper Casey O'Connor early, tallying nine shots in the opening half. New Haven was also unsuccessful on converting four corner kicks in the opening 45.
Georgian Court's production carried over into the second half, as it scored off a header from Kroon, in just the 47th minute. Battling back, the Chargers got shots from Simms and Garcia but both sailed wide.
Determined to get on the board, the Chargers continued to test Lions' goalkeeper O'Connor, forcing her to make saves from shots by Stein and Marra. Georgian Court put an end to New Haven's attack and tallied their fourth goal of the day in the 71st minute. Elizabeth Kroon scored off a feed from Rose Franze. Looking to break the shutout, with a little help from a Georgian Court yellow card, the Chargers got on the board off a Simms one-timer from fellow senior Marra. The game would end in a 4-1 Georgian Court Victory.
O'Connor tallied eight saves for the Lions and Kroon led the way in shots with six.
Looking to bounce back from the loss, the Chargers have their first home game of the 2014 campaign against Dowling on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. at Kayo Field.
