WEST HAVEN, CONN. – The University of New Haven women's basketball team placed four players in double-figures as the Chargers won their sixth straight game, topping the Assumption Greyhounds 67-55 in a Northeast-10 Conference game at Charger Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
New Haven improves to 12-2 with the win and is 6-2 in the NE-10. Assumption falls to 10-4 and is 5-4 in conference.
Elizabeth Cruso (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) led the Chargers with 16 points followed by 12 for
Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy).
Ashley LeBlanc (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) and
Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) each netted 10. Additionally, four New Haven players had eight or more rebounds led by
India Dotson (Akron, Ohio/Frederick (Md.) / Monmouth University) who pulled in a career-high nine boards while
Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career), LeBlanc and Hayes had eight apiece.
The Chargers never trailed as LeBlanc scored the first points of the game 21 seconds into the contest. Leading 13-9 seven minutes into the game, New Haven went on a 12-4 run that was led as much by the defense as the offense. During the spurt, the Chargers held Assumption to 2-for-15 shooting from the field and forced seven turnovers in building a 25-13 lead before eventually taking a 26-17 advantage into halftime.
After the Greyhounds scored the first basket of the second stanza, New Haven ripped off a 21-9 run to take its largest lead of the night at 47-28 with 11:05 to play. LeBlanc keyed the run for the Chargers, scoring eight points. Assumption did not go quietly, using a 10-0 run of its own to cut the lead into single digits before UNH recovered to cement the final score.
The win was the first for the Chargers against the Greyhounds since November 24, 2009.
New Haven returns to action on Tuesday at 1:00 pm when is hosts Saint Michael's in a Northeast-10 matchup as part of its Class at the Court event.
