Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 24 points and 16 rebounds and
Jonny Ocasio (Queens, N.Y./Charlotte (Fla.) / Hillsborough Community College) notched career-highs with 20 points and nine rebounds, but the University of New Haven men's basketball team came up short against the Southern Connecticut State University Owls 74-65 on Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium.
With the win, Southern Connecticut State improves to 10-3 and is 5-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference while New Haven is 7-5 overall with a 2-4 record in the NE-10.
Trailing 34-26 with 1:09 to go in the first half, New Haven got a lift when Ocasio drained a three-pointer to slice the lead to five. Following a defensive stop, Anderson collected an offensive rebound and a layup to trail by only three at halftime.
In the second half, UNH once again attacked, taking an early 37-36 lead on a pair of Anderson free throws. The Chargers and Owls played evenly during the next six minutes when a couple of shots from the charity stripe by Ocasio tied the game at 47-47 with 10:03 remaining. From that point, SCSU went on a 15-3 run to open up a 62-50 lead at the 5:21 mark before cementing the final score.
For the game, New Haven held a 50-39 advantage in rebounding and outscored Southern Connecticut State 24-11 at the line.
New Haven now goes on the road for the first time in three weeks, traveling to Goffstown, N.H. for an NE-10 matchup against Saint Anselm on January 7 at 5:30 p.m.
