WEST HAVEN, Conn. –
Carlie Schecht (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) had a goal and an assist as the University of New Haven women's soccer team earned a key win in the Northeast-10 Conference, downing the Pace Setters 2-0 on Saturday night.
With the win, New Haven is now 9-4-3 with a 5-4-3 record in the NE-10. Pace falls to 7-5-4 and drops to 5-4-4 in conference play.
Despite several chances for the homestanding Chargers, the game was scoreless into the 45th minute when Schecht sent a ball into the box from the left side. At the top of the area,
Danielle Widmann (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) collected and struck a shot that deflected off the goalkeeper and found its way across the line for a 1-0 lead.
In the 54th minute, Schecht came through again, this time with the first goal for the defender since 2013 when she gathered a turnover and drove the ball on net, hitting the underside of the crossbar before going over the line for a 2-0 Chargers advantage.
Deandra Nash (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) came up with three saves in goal for her third consecutive shutout.
For the match, New Haven outshot Pace 20-10 including 10-3 in shots on goal.
The Chargers return to action on Wednesday when they travel to nationally ranked No. 17 Saint Rose for a 5:30 p.m. Northeast-10 Conference matchup in Albany, N.Y.
