WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Former University of New Haven men's soccer player Juan Carlos Osorio has been named the manager of the Mexican National Soccer team.
Osorio played for New Haven in 1985 and 1986 and was named an All-NECC and All-New England performer in 1985 when he scored four goals and added three assists, totaling 11 points for a team that finished 11-7-1 and ranked as high as 18th in NCAA Division II.
Following the conclusion of his playing career, Osorio began a coaching career that has seen him manage in the highest leagues in Colombia, Mexico, Brazil and the United States. He coached the Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer in 2007, taking a last place team to a playoff spot in his first season. He moved on from Chicago to manage the New York Red Bulls in 2008 and 2009.
Most recently, Osorio was the manager of São Paulo FC in Brazil Serie A.
Osorio's first match with El Tri will be on Tuesday, Oct. 13 in a friendly against Panama. Â
