Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bradford, Kerr Each Score 21 in New Haven Setback

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) and Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) each scored 21 points, but the University of New Haven women's basketball team was upended by the Bloomsburg Huskies in a non-conference game on Friday night. It was the season opener for both teams.

In addition to her 21 points, Kerr added seven rebounds and four steals on 9-for-13 shooting from the floor. Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) also tallied double figure scoring for the Chargers with 14 points to go with seven rebounds. Mia Hopkins led all players with 24 points, 14 rebounds and six assists.

The Chargers started off the game on fire, shooting an eye-popping 63.2 percent in the first quarter, opening a 31-16 lead. Kerr hit all four of her shots in the frame. Taking advantage of Bloomsburg miscues, New Haven scored 12 points off seven Huskies turnovers in the period.

In the second period, the Blue and Gold extended to its largest lead of the night on its first basket as Hebert canned one of her two three-pointers, making it 34-16. Bloomsburg would chip away, going on a 13-4 run, capped by a Hopkins jumper at the 3:45 mark to pull within nine. Trading baskets during the next three minutes, New Haven took the lead into the locker room as a layup by Kerr with 26 seconds remaining in the half made it 44-32 heading into the break.

The Huskies began to make their move in the third quarter, shooting just more than 47 percent from the floor, cutting the lead to 56-49. In the fourth, they continued to slice into the advantage, eventually taking a 69-66 lead with 2:03 remaining. Hebert answered back, hitting her second triple of the night to tie the game at 69-69. After a pair of free throws by Morgan Klunk gave Bloomsburg a two-point edge, the Chargers rallied as Bradford, who scored nine of her points in the final frame, drove to the basket, scored and was fouled with 1:02 left. She would make the free throw to give New Haven a 72-71 lead. The Huskies converted five-of-six from the line in the final 38 seconds, however, to pull away.

The Chargers have a short turn around as they head to Oakdale, N.Y. for their first road test of the season, taking on Dowling on Sunday, Nov. 15. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
