Chargers Drop 17-14 Decision to Assumption in NE-10 Championship Game

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior linebacker Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) picked off an Assumption pass and recovered a Greyhounds fumble to set up both of the Chargers touchdowns as the University of New Haven football team dropped a 17-14 decision in the Northeast-10 Championship. With the loss, New Haven falls to 7-4 overall.

In the second quarter, Condit collected a tipped pass, by Mark Clements (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest / Worcester Academy), and ran it back 54 yards to set up New Haven's first scoring drive of the game. The 54-yard run back for Condit was his longest of the season. On the ensuing drive, sophomore quarterback Ajee Patterson (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) dumped a pass deep in the end zone to DeeJay White (Brooklyn, N.Y./Sheepshead Bay / Bowling Green State University) for his first touchdown of the season.

Trailing 9-7 in the third quarter, Condit came up big again as he recovered a fumble by Assumption's Brendan Tobey, forced by Dave Calderon (Neptune, N.J./Neptune), setting the Chargers up on the Greyhounds 23 yard line. Patterson again came up big, this time on a third down situation where he connected with Henry Adegunle (Rockaway, N.Y./Channel View) to put the Chargers on a fresh set of downs inside the 10-yard line. Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) capped off the drive when he curled to his right and around the line to drive in from five yards out and give New Haven a 14-9 lead.

For the game, Anderson would lead the running game with 75 yards on 21 carries, while Trevor Officer (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) followed him with 27 yards on eight carries. Patterson closed out his day, completing 50-percent of his passes, 13-of-26, for 95 yards.

Defensively, New Haven was led by Matt Zakrzewski (Traverse City, Mich./Saint Francis / Indiana) who finished with 17 tackles, a career-high in a Chargers uniform. Joining him in double figures was transfer Dean Tsopanides (Orange, Conn./Torrington / Iowa) who finished with 12 tackles, including a sack. Both Zakrzewski and Tsopanides finished with 1.5 tackles for loss. Zakrzewski also added a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

FIRST QUARTER NOTES

·           The Chargers mustered just one first down in the opening quarter which came on the first drive of the game. That movement of the chains came courtesy of Ajee Patterson (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) who connected with Ty Headen (Newark, N.J./American History) for a 10-yard pick up.

·           Overall for the quarter, Patterson completed two of seven attempts for a total of 13 yards. On the ground, Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) led the way with six carries resulting in a total of 13 yards. Trevor Officer (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) and Patterson also picked up yardage on the ground with Officer gaining three yards and Patterson two.

·           Defensively, Matt Zakrzewski (Traverse City, Mich./Saint Francis / Indiana) led the Chargers with four tackles, while Dean Tsopanides (Orange, Conn./Torrington / Iowa) and Drake Harris (Union, N.J./Union) each added three.

SECOND QUARTER NOTES

·           On the Greyhounds second drive of the quarter, Assumption started a fresh set of downs only to be upset by New Haven's senior linebacker Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) who picked off a Brendan Tobey pass and ran it back 54 yards to set up the Chargers first scoring play of the game. The pass from Tobey was initially tipped by Mark Clements (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest / Worcester Academy) before falling into Condit's grasp from which point he returned it to the Assumption 21.

·           Trevor Officer (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) and Ajee Patterson (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) started the ensuing drive with runs of four and nine yards, respectively, that set up first and goal. Patterson would cap off the drive with a two-yard pass deep in the end zone to DeeJay White (Brooklyn, N.Y./Sheepshead Bay / Bowling Green State University) for the touchdown.

·           Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) led the Chargers running game in the second quarter, finishing with 28 yards on six carries. The most common target for Patterson was Ty Headen (Newark, N.J./American History) who finished with two catches for 20 yards. The pass to White in the end zone was his first catch of the day.

THIRD QUARTER NOTES

·           The highlight of the third quarter for the Chargers came again by senior linebacker Tyler Condit (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) who picked up his first fumble recovery of the season, setting the offense up at the Greyhounds 23 yard line. The fumble was forced by Dave Calderon (Neptune, N.J./Neptune).

·           On the ensuing drive, Patterson completed both passes he attempted, the second of which was a 17-yarder to Henry Adegunle (Rockaway, N.Y./Channel View) which set the Chargers up with first and goal. Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) didn't waste time closing out the drive as he capped it off with a five-yard run to put the Chargers ahead 14-9.

FOURTH QUARTER NOTES

·           After driving 51 yards in over five minutes, the Chargers looked to be in position to set up a game-tying field goal before a pass into the end zone was intercepted. New Haven would have one more attempt to get within range for sophomore Danny Stock (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) with 15 seconds remaining, but The Greyhounds defense closed out the game with a sack of Ajee Patterson (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) without enough time to stop the clock for the Chargers.

·           Patterson closed out the game completing 5-of-9 passes in the fourth quarter for a total of 34 yards. Henry Adegunle (Rockaway, N.Y./Channel View) and Ty Headen (Newark, N.J./American History) each finished with two completions for a total of 15 and 14 yards, respectively.
