WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's volleyball team clinched a spot in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship next week as the Chargers downed the Stonehill Skyhawks 3-1 in an NE-10 matchup on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, New Haven is 16-14 overall and finishes 7-7 in conference play. The Skyhawks are 11-15 with a 5-9 mark in the NE-10.
For the Chargers,
Kristen Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) led the way with 18 kills and 18 digs, her ninth double-double of the year, to go along with a .321 hitting percentage.
Micki Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) had 10 kills and four blocks.
The first set was a tight battle throughout as neither team held more than a four point lead. Trailing 23-21, New Haven rallied to win five of the next six points to win the set 26-24. Stonehill responded, winning the second set 25-19 behind a .237 hitting percentage.
Early in the third, the Chargers got a spark from their bench as
Nicole Morales (Moca, Puerto Rico/Carib Christian) and
Meagan Anderson (Palm Springs, Calif./Palm Springs) came into the lineup. Morales recorded five kills and a block in the set and Anderson steadied the serving as New Haven took the frame 25-18.
The fourth set saw Lee shine as she drove home seven kills and had a handful of digs as the Blue and Gold withstood a Skyhawks rally late, winning 25-19.
Prior to the match, New Haven honored seniors Lee,
Caprisha Richards (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands/Antilles School) and
Damianis Eusebio (Miramar, Fla./University School) for their contributions to the team the past four seasons.
New Haven will wait to find out their opponent in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship. The match will be played on Tuesday evening.Â
