Women's Basketball Uses Explosive Run to Down Goldey-Beacom

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's basketball team used a 25-0 run spanning the first and second periods as the Chargers downed the Goldey-Beacom Lightning 70-53 in a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, New Haven is now 3-3. The Lightning falls to 0-7.

Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) led four players in double-figure scoring with 20 points. Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) had 14 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. Quana Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) added 11 points and Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) netted 10. Hebert was one of three players who had nine rebounds for the Chargers as she was joined by India Dotson (Akron, Ohio/Frederick (Md.) / Monmouth University) and Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) in that category. Oge also contributed with four steals and three blocked shots. As a team, New Haven outrebounded Goldey-Beacom 58-28 and had 24 offensive boards.

Things did not start well for the Blue and Gold as the Lightning jumped out to a 16-4 lead at the 3:22 mark of the first period, going 7-for-12 from the field while forcing four turnovers.

After the two squads traded a pair of baskets each, a jumper by Mikila Stefanski put GBC on top 20-10 with 42 seconds remaining in the quarter. It was the last time that the Lightning scored in the next nine minutes as the Chargers embarked on their massive run. Smith hit the first of two free throws to start things off. Oge fought her way inside and grabbed the offensive rebound and a layup after a miss on the second free throw to get the spurt started.

Entering the second quarter, New Haven sliced the advantage to one at 20-19 on a Bradford jumper just 96 seconds into the frame before taking the lead on a Kerr layup at the 6:59 mark. Continuing the run, the Chargers scored 14 more unanswered points, eventually building a 35-20 lead. They went 10-for-16 from the floor during the run with Kerr scoring eight points and Bradford going for six and did not allow Goldey-Beacom to score until 1:09 remained in the half.

New Haven saw its lead dip under double-digits just once from that point on, extending to as many as 20 in the second half. The Chargers dominated inside, scoring 54 points in the paint and delivering 18 second chance points.

The Blue and Gold returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 2 when cross-town rival Southern Connecticut State comes to Charger Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
