ALBANY, N.Y. – The University of New Haven women's soccer team battled nationally ranked No. 17 Saint Rose to a scoreless draw through regulation and two overtime periods, but the Chargers were upended 4-1 on penalty kicks in a Northeast-10 Championship quarterfinal on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
With the draw, New Haven ends its season 10-5-4. Saint Rose is now 14-2-3 and advances to play the winner of the quarterfinal contest between American International and Assumption in a semifinal tilt on Friday.
Â
Despite being outshot, the Chargers arguably had the two best chances of the first half. The initial one came in the 16th minute when
Marisa Garcia (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) played a ball ahead to
Sierra Stein (Sherman, Conn./Immaculate), who was ruled mere inches offside, negating her shot. With less than two minutes remaining in the frame, Garcia was able to collect a loose ball in the box, turned and fired, but the Golden Knights keeper made a diving save to keep the match scoreless.
Â
Saint Rose had the best early chance in the second half when three minutes in,
Deandra Nash (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) made a save off a shot from Gianna Smith. Danae Kaldaridou collected the rebound and struck from point blank range with the keeper out of position, but
Miranda Smith (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) held the back line and blocked the ball away to keep the game scoreless.
Â
Late in the half, New Haven had a last chance as Garcia rifled a shot at the top of the box that was blocked, sending the game to overtime. Beginning the extra period, the Chargers nearly scored off the opening tap as
Kelly Quigley (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury Memorial) closed on a ball down the left side before Madison Taylor came off her line to close the angle and make the save.
Â
Following two scoreless overtimes, the game went into deciding penalty kicks. After falling behind 2-0,
Miranda Smith (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) scored on her second round attempt to close the gap to 2-1, but that was as close as New Haven would get.
Â
The 2015 edition of the women's soccer team ended their season with 10 or more wins for the third time in the last four seasons and earned its first win over a ranked opponent since 2012.Â
