Chargers Drop Exhibition Match-up to #20 UConn 83-43

The University of New Haven men's basketball team dropped an 83-43 decision against #20 UConn in an exhibition match-up at the XL Center in downtown Hartford. Leading the Chargers in their final tune up before opening the regular season was sophomore Michael Bourke (South Orange, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton) who finished with 10 points in his first ever game in a Charger uniform.

As a team, New Haven finished the exhibition shooting 30.8 percent on 16-of-52 with six of those field goals coming from outside the three point arc. The six long range baskets came on 24 attempts for an average of 25.0 percent. Individually Bourke's 10 points came on a pair of three pointers, while he finished 4-of-4 from the free throw line.

Joining Bourke in leading the team was senior Joshua McDaniels who finished with nine points on 4-of-10 shooting, while junior Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy) chipped in seven and sophomore Tommy Hunt (Smithfield, R.I./St. Andrew's) added six. New Haven also trailed in the battle of the boards with a 43-26 margin, led by Mosley who finished with six rebounds.

FIRST HALF NOTES

·           The Chargers kept the game within reach through the first 10 minutes, pulling within three points thanks to a three pointer from Joshua Guddemi (Nottingham, England/Derby) with 9:56 remaining before the break. Prior to that, the Chargers rattled off five unanswered points thanks to a jumper from Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy) and a three from Tommy Hunt (Smithfield, R.I./St. Andrew's) off a feed from Mosley. The Guddemi three pointer also came thanks to a pass from Mosley.

·           Leading New Haven in the opening half was Guddemi who finished with five points, while Mosley added four.

·           The Chargers first bucket of the game came from beyond the arc thanks to Michael Bourke (South Orange, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton) who used a pass from Levi Gillespie to put New Haven on the board.

SECOND HALF NOTES

·           Sophomore Michael Bourke (South Orange, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton) led the Chargers in the second half as he finished with seven points on a three pointer and a perfect 4-of-4 effort at the free throw line.

·           Late in the second half the Chargers rattled off back-to-back scores on two occasions. The first came with five minutes remaining with Levy Gillespie (Meriden, Conn./Capital Preparatory Magnet) score on a jumper followed by a pair of free throws from Bourke. The second came in the final 90 seconds when Joshua Guddemi (Nottingham, England/Derby) opened up with a layup followed again by a pair of Bourke free throws.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

·           Sophomore Michael Bourke (South Orange, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton) scored in double figures for the first time in a Chargers uniform, finishing with 10 points on a pair of three pointers and a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line.

·           Freshman Najee Larcher (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) didn't led the UConn size bother him, recording a pair of blocks in his first collegiate contest.

·           Junior Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy) completed a well-rounded outing with seven points, six rebounds and four assists.

·           Senior Joshua Guddemi (Nottingham, England/Derby) finished one points shy of entering double digits as he finished 4-of-10, with one of those a three pointer, for nine points.

The Chargers will extend their preseason by five days as they will not open their 26-game slate until Wednesday, November 18 when they travel to Syracuse, N.Y. for a Northeast-10 showdown against Le Moyne. New Haven opens the new season with three-straight NE-10 match-ups. The season opener against Le Moyne is schedule for a 7:00 p.m. opening tip with the game part of a doubleheader with the Chargers' women's basketball team.
