PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. –
Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) scored 17 points, but the University of New Haven women's basketball team dropped a defensive battle to the Pace Setters 60-55 in a Northeast-10 Conference game on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Pace is 5-2 overall with a 2-2 record in the NE-10. The Chargers are 4-4 with a 2-3 mark in conference play.
In addition to Hebert's team-leading point total,
Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) and
Quana Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) each tallied 11.
Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) led the Blue and Gold with 10 rebounds while Smith had nine.
Neither team started well as the two squads shot under 30 percent in the opening period with Pace taking an 11-9 lead as the first quarter ended. Early in the second with the Setters leading 14-12, New Haven embarked on a 13-4 run that spanned nearly seven minutes, going up 25-18. Hebert ignited the spurt, scoring 10 points including hitting a pair of three pointers.
Holding a 27-22 lead early in the third period, the Chargers shooting started to go cold, hitting on just 2-of-11 shots while Pace went on a 21-6 run to open up a 43-33 lead with two minutes to go in the third period.
Undaunted, New Haven got a three-pointer from Bradford to end the quarter. Carrying the momentum into the fourth quarter, the Blue and Gold went on an 8-3 run, pulling to 46-40 on a pair of Kerr free throws with 6:26 remaining. After the Setters went back up 58-47, New Haven made one last push, using an 8-2 run to end the contest, coming up just short.
The Chargers are now off until Friday, Dec. 18 when they host St. Thomas Aquinas in a non-conference matchup at Charger Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
