WEST HAVEN, Conn. –
Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) scored a career-high 35 points and added 17 rebounds as the University of New Haven men's basketball team rallied from a double-digit first half deficit to defeat the Adelphi Panthers 62-61 on Senior Night in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division matchup on Tuesday evening at Charger Gymnasium.
With the win, New Haven is now 15-11 with a 10-10 record in the NE-10. Adelphi ends its season 6-20 with a 3-17 conference mark.
Based on the results of Tuesday's action around the conference, the Chargers are the fourth seed in the Southwest Division. New Haven will open Northeast-10 Conference Championship play on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. with a First Round tilt against Merrimack, the fifth seed from the Northeast Division. The two teams played once this season with the Chargers earning a 60-39 win in North Andover, Mass. on January 31.
In addition to Anderson's efforts,
Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy) added 11 points for the New Haven to go along with five assists.
Levy Gillespie (Meriden, Conn./Capital Preparatory Magnet) scored 10 points.
Adelphi was led by Duane Morgan who netted 22. Ryan DiNicola scored a career-high 18 points on 7-for-7 shooting for the Panthers.
The Chargers found themselves down early as Adelphi scored the first eight points of the game on its way to building a 27-9 lead with 8:44 remaining in the first half. New Haven rallied, going on a 20-8 run during the next six minutes, hitting on 8-of-9 shots from the floor to cut the lead to 35-29 with 2:25 to go in the half before entering the locker room trailing 37-31.
After the two teams traded buckets to open the first minute of the second stanza, the Chargers went on a 14-4 run with Anderson scoring 11 of the 14 points, to take a 47-44 lead. The Panthers fought back to take a 54-49 lead on a Morgan layup with 8:19 to go.
From there, Anderson started the last New Haven rally. The senior hit a layup with 7:58 left to set a career-high with 31 points. After a Gillespie three-pointer tied the game at 54-54, Anderson drained another basket, A layup by
Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech) and the final bucket of the night by Anderson capped an 11-0 run to put the Chargers on top 60-54 with 2:41 remaining.
Adelphi made one last push, slicing the New Haven lead to a single point at the 1:17 mark, but the Chargers locked down on defense in the final minute to preserve the win.
Prior to the game, the men's basketball team honored the careers of Anderson and James. The two will conclude their careers with postseason appearances in all four of their seasons wearing the Blue and Gold. As a tandem, Anderson and James have combined for more than 2,000 points and 1,800 rebounds.Â
