Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 21 Women's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker to No. 10 Adelphi

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) recorded her tenth double-double of the season behind 22 points and 13 rebounds, but the No. 21 University of New Haven women's basketball team was upended by the No. 10 Adelphi Panthers 76-73 on Senior Night in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division matchup on Tuesday at Charger Gymnasium.

With the win, Adelphi improves to 25-3 and is 18-2 in the NE-10. New Haven is now 22-4 with a 16-4 conference mark.

The Chargers finished second in the Southwest Division and thus earn a bye in the First Round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship. New Haven will host a quarterfinal game against Assumption on Sunday, March 1 at 3:00 p.m. It is a rematch of last year's NE-10 quarterfinals, won by the Greyhounds 61-58.

In addition to Hayes efforts, New Haven got double-figure scoring off the bench from Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) with 14 and Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) with 13. Hebert also added a career-high nine rebounds. Ashley LeBlanc (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) came up a point shy of her third straight double-double, scoring nine points while pulling in 10 boards.

As would be expected in a game between two nationally-ranked teams, the game was a tight battle that saw seven ties and nine lead changes with neither team holding more than a seven point lead. A layup midway through the first half by Bradford put New Haven up 18-16 before Adelphi went on an 11-2 run during the next 4:03 to take a 27-20 lead with 5:56 remaining in the half.

The Chargers battled back to end the first half well, trailing by just one at 36-35 heading into halftime. Opening the second frame, LeBlanc tossed in the first bucket to put New Haven on top 37-36. The Panthers responded with an 11-3 run to go up 47-40 at the 14:27 mark.

From there, the two squads battled evenly during the next four minutes before the Chargers made their move. A Bradford triple started the spurt followed by a free throw Hayes and two at the line from LeBlanc to cut the lead to 54-53. An Adelphi turnover led to a fastbreak layup by Hebert to put New Haven on top. After neither team scored in its next two possessions, the Chargers extended the lead to 57-54 on a layup by LeBlanc, capping a 10-0 run.

This time, the Panthers responded, going of a 14-7 dash of their own to take a 68-64 lead with 4:48 to go. A layup by Hebert and two free throws by Hayes tied the game at 68-68. From there, Adelphi maintained a three point lead throughout the remainder of the contest. New Haven had a final shot to tie at the buzzer, but a desperation three-point attempt came up short, allowing the Panthers to come away with the win.

Prior to the game, the Chargers honored their five seniors for their efforts as Elizabeth Cruso (Westerly, R.I./Westerly), Hayes, LeBlanc, Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) and Rykema Stone (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) were recognized. The quintet has seen an amazing turnaround in their four years, going 3-24 as freshmen to entering the 2015 Northeast-10 Conference Championships at 22-4.
