TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of New Haven softball team scored two seventh inning runs, but was upended by No. 23 California Baptist 7-2 as the Chargers continued play in the NFCA Division II Leadoff Classic on Saturday morning.
With the win, the Lancers improve to 3-1 while New Haven falls to 0-3.
Trailing 7-0 heading into the seventh inning, the Chargers began their rally.
Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) opened the frame swinging at a first-pitch fastball, lacing it into the left-centerfield gap for a double.
Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) came up next and lined a single into center, moving Devlin to third. Both runners would advance a base on a wild pitch, cutting the lead to 7-1. After a sacrifice by
Gilly Childs (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) moved Schiebe to third,
Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) reached on an a single deep in the hole at shortstop to plate Schiebe and make it 7-2.
A scoreless game into the third inning, Cal Baptist broke things open with a seven run frame that saw it send 13 batters to the plate.
Carsin Conner (Howell, N.J./Howell / Moravian) pitched well in relief for the Blue and Gold, tossing four shutout innings, striking out three and allowing just one hit.Â
New Haven now awaits play later in the day to find out its schedule for the remainder of the Classic.
