WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The nationally-ranked No. 5 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference contest Thursday afternoon to No. 4 Le Moyne, 18-10, at Kayo Field. The Chargers were led by senior
Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) and junior
Courtney Ackland (Perth, Western Australia/Churchlands) who both scored three goals in the loss.
New Haven falls to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Dolphins improve to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Campbell added 11 draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Ackland chipped in with one ground ball.
Corinne Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial),
Maya Szymanski (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) and
Caitlin O'Brien (Branford, Conn./Branford) each tallied two points, with Fisher leading the trio with a pair of goals. Szymanski and O'Brien both recorded a goal and an assist. Sophomore
Nicole Belanger (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) wrapped up points with an assist. Fisher added a team-high five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Le Moyne was led by eight points from Erica Geremia (4g, 4a) and seven points (5g, 2a) by Maggie Monnat.
Campbell scored the game's first goal by taking the opening draw and going the distance to net her 12th goal of the season just 12 seconds into the contest. The lead 1-0 lead was the only UNH held all afternoon. Le Moyne scored the next six goals and took a five-point advantage with 11:32 left in the first half. Ackland scored her 10th of the season on a no-look behind the back goal at the 10:39 mark and the Chargers were within four, 6-2. The Dolphins rattled off another four unanswered goals before Fisher score with 31 seconds remaining in the half to bring the score to 10-3 at the break.
Another 12 seconds into the second half, Campbell scored her second of the afternoon, but the Dolphins would surge once again to take a 16-4 lead with 20:39 left. The Chargers managed to cut the lead within 10 in the final four minutes, but the Le Moyne lead was too great. New Haven scored twice in the final minute to bring the final score within eight.
New Haven returns to action on Sunday, March 22 when it travels to No. 11 Saint Anselm in another NE-10 showdown. Game time in Manchester, N.H. is set for 1 p.m. with the Hawks.
